The Diocese of Mityana: A Journey of Faith and Transformation

The Diocese of Mityana, located in central Uganda, has a rich history that dates back to 1977 when it was officially established. Since its inception, the diocese has witnessed remarkable growth and transformation under the leadership of its notable Bishops.

The first Bishop of Mityana, Yokana Mukasa, took charge in 1977. He was a visionary leader who laid the foundation for the diocese and worked tirelessly to strengthen the church’s presence in the region. During his tenure, the diocese experienced significant growth in the number of parishes, schools, and social programs.

Following Bishop Mukasa’s tenure, the second Bishop, Wilson Mutebi, assumed office in January 1989. Bishop Mutebi’s leadership style was characterized by a strong focus on community development and education. He championed numerous initiatives aimed at improving the livelihoods of the people in the diocese and enhancing educational opportunities for children.

In January 2002, the diocese welcomed its third Bishop, Dunstan Bukenya. Bishop Bukenya was known for his pastoral care and dedication to empowering the local clergy and lay leaders. He prioritized mentorship programs and leadership training, fostering a sense of unity and shared responsibility among the clergy and laity.

In 2008, the fourth Bishop, Stephen Kaziimba, was enthroned. Bishop Kaziimba’s tenure brought about notable achievements and a renewed sense of spiritual growth within the diocese. Under his leadership, the diocese expanded its social outreach programs, focusing on healthcare, women empowerment, and vocational training.

In addition to his role as Bishop of Mityana, Bishop Kaziimba was elected as the Archbishop of Uganda and Bishop of Kampala in 2019, further solidifying his influence and impact on the Anglican Church in Uganda.

After Bishop Kaziimba’s promotion, the diocese welcomed its fifth and current Bishop, James Bukomeko, on February 2, 2020. Bishop Bukomeko is known for his commitment to fostering interfaith dialogue and promoting unity within the community. He has actively engaged with various religious leaders and community stakeholders to promote peace and social cohesion.

Throughout the years, the Diocese of Mityana has been instrumental in providing social services, education, and healthcare to the people it serves. The diocese operates several primary and secondary schools, vocational training centers, and health clinics, all of which have significantly contributed to the overall development of the region.

The Bishops of Mityana have not only overseen the spiritual growth of the diocese but have also been actively involved in addressing the social and economic challenges faced by the local communities. Their leadership and dedication to service have left a lasting impact on the lives of thousands of people, irrespective of their religious affiliations.

The Diocese of Mityana continues to play a vital role in the broader Anglican Church in Uganda, actively participating in regional and national church activities and contributing to the church’s mission of spreading the Gospel and promoting social justice.

As the diocese looks to the future, it is expected that the current Bishop, James Bukomeko, will continue to build upon the foundation laid by his predecessors. With a strong focus on community engagement, education, and social development, the Diocese of Mityana is poised to remain a beacon of hope and positive change in the region for years to come.
